Just like other Indo-Aryan languages, it is also derived from Sanskrit through Prakrit and Apabhramsha. The first literary records of Gujarati are religious verses dating back to the 17th century. Later, it was cultivated by scholars, writers, and poets. In the 19th century, a British colonial administrator, Alexander Kinloch Forbes explored the history of Gujarati and compiled a large number of manuscripts.

Gujarati is written as a cursive-style script derived from the Devanagari script. It is different from Devanagari as it does not have the horizontal line above the script’s letters like Devanagari. It can also be written using a Persian or Arabic script, but this method is not much popular and is confined to few districts of Gujarat.

If we talk about the Gujarati grammar, it is very similar to Hindi, Bengali and Punjabi. Just like these languages, it also adds suffixes to roots to construct words and express grammatical relations. Like Hindi, English and Telugu script, it is also written from left to right.
